SCARBOROUGH, Jacqueline Pappert

Scarborough,jacqueline

Jacqueline Pappert Scarborough

December 20, 1930 – January 11, 2018

Jacqueline (Jacquie) passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018 in Silver Spring, Maryland.  She is survived by her three children: Clay Scarborough (Karen), Gwen Scarborough (Dusty Hecker), Sarah Kestner (Jeff); nine grandchildren: Kim Morehead-Lane, Sarah & Bryan Scarborough; Kerry, Danny & Matt Hecker; Lauren, Landon and Jacquelyn Kestner; and one great-granddaughter, Clara Morehead-Lane.  Jack, her husband of 62 years, pre-deceased her in July 2015. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 6701 Wisconsin Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD, on Friday January 26, 2018 at 11 a.m.

Jacqueline Doris was born on December 20, 1930 in North Hollywood, California to Mabel Charlotte Reinhart and Alexander Hugo Pappert. In the summer of 1933, Jacquie and her mother took a ship via the Panama Canal to New York so that she could meet her parents’ relatives.  Four years later Jacquie, her parents and her older half-sister Marguerite relocated to Queens, New York where Jacquie spent the next six years in Jackson Heights close to her grandmother and many aunts, uncles and cousins.  In February 1944 she and her parents returned to California, this time to San Mateo.

Following her graduation from San Mateo High School in 1948, Jacquie attended Stanford University in nearby Palo Alto. She spent three upper class years living at Storey House, serving as President her senior year. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa in the spring of 1952 with a degree in Economics, Jacquie accepted a job as an accountant for a firm in San Francisco.

In 1952 Jacquie met her future husband on a blind double-date set up by her good friend Polly. The dinner date was a hit, and the new couple dated until Jack, a naval officer stationed at Treasure Island, began his tour of the Western Pacific a few months later. They continued their courtship through love letters over the next six months and became engaged in March of 1953.

Jack and Jacquie wed on May 30, 1953 at the “Little Church Around the Corner” in New York City and celebrated at a dinner reception at the Starlight Room of the RCA Building, now known as 30 Rockefeller Center. Following a honeymoon in New York City, they moved to Cambridge where Jack joined a Master’s program at MIT Sloan’s School of Management and Jacquie accepted a position at Harvard Business School researching and writing cases for professor Robert Anthony.

Just prior to the birth of their first child, Clay, Jacquie traded in her professional career to become a full-time mother. The birth of two more children, Gwen and Sarah, followed after a move to Pittsburgh where Jack worked for Westinghouse. In 1962, Jack and Jacquie moved their young family to a newly built home in Rockville. They remained in this home for the next 31 years with the exception of Jack’s assignment to Zagreb, Croatia in 1975 and 1976. Despite the challenges of living in a third-world socialist country, Jacquie make the most of her time abroad and thoroughly enjoyed family travel throughout Europe.

During their retirement years, Jack & Jacquie built a beautiful home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where they were members of the local country club and enjoyed weekend travel, gardening and community clubs. They also lived for four years in a retirement village in Durham before moving back to Maryland to be closer to one of their children.

Jacquie will be remembered for her devotion to her family, friends, and the communities she served. She loved children, especially each and every grandchild, and also enjoyed and valued her life-long friends and neighbors. She was a member of three Episcopal churches, including three decades at St. John’s Norwood Parish in Bethesda (where she worked at The Opportunity Shop and as an Assistant Treasurer), Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Durham.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National Center for Children and Families in Bethesda (www.nccf-cares.org).

Dorothy Elizabeth Bailey

Born on April 18, 1930, in Richmond, Virginia, Dorothy passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. During her early childhood, she along with her mother, Gladys V. Hill and grandparents took up residence in the Washington D.C. area.

As an adult, Dorothy developed a career in the medical field which culminated while working at Georgetown University Hospital. During her tenure, she rose from an entry-level position to a supervisory position while working within the supply chain at Georgetown, where she retired by 1993.

Dorothy loved watching boxing and current MMA/UFC matches, her secondary love was watching football games (favorite football teams were the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Ravens) and she also enjoyed shopping for a good deal.

She loved her family.  She would always try to find a way to keep us together. She was our own personal “Bailey Glue.” The “Bailey Glue” that she took extreme pride and joy in, not only watching over us but constantly teaching us. She was so important to all of us and will be dearly missed.

Dorothy leaves behind two daughters, Arzena Gross, and Michele Bailey; grandchildren Everick Gross (Michelle), Mendel Bailey, and Lea Bailey; great-grandchildren, Mendel Bailey Jr., Kiana Bailey, Justin Gross, and Thomas Gross; along with her supportive friend Terry Donaldson.
